Finding CSS color codes

Problem finding the right color codes for your stylesheet? CSS Color Chart might help you. The page contains a neutral colors chart and a general-purpose color chart. The colors in the palletes can be use with either HTML or CSS documents. There are currently 29 neutral colors and 732 general-purpose colors in the chart. The colors are arrange according to their color name and color code.

The neutral colors are taken from a Behr Premium Plus Interior/Exterior paint color swatch found at a hardware store. The paper was scanned into Paint Shop Pro, where the swatch color was averaged and extracted. Colors with a blue or green tint are termed cool, while colors with a red or yellow tint are warm. Grays and white are totally neutral. Neutral colors can be used as background colors for tables and pages.

Making the perfect color codes combination

HTML Color Code Combination Chooser might help you choose a color scheme.

The color scheme chooser (GX) is based on classic color theory pioneered by Johannes Itten in the mid 1900s. Johannes Itten developed a new kind of color wheel that changed the way color was seen. This wheel is still in use today.

Why use Hex code instead of color name?

Eventhough there are some difficulty to understand hex color codes, color names are consider to be non-standard. When you are specifying colors for your page, use the hex color codes (such as “#FFFFFF”), and not the names of the colors (such as “white”), as some older browsers don’t support all the color names. In terms of flexibility, there are about a million different combinations that you can specify with hex color codes. Hex color codes are a bit difficult to understand than color names, particularly if you’re not used to hexadecimal notation. Nevertheless, it’s appropiate to use hex color codes which are stable and understood universally.

Update: As I browse through my old posts, I accidently remember about the RGB Hex Colour Chart by Dave Child which is famous of his cheat sheets creation.

The RGB Hex colour chart is a very large (183kB) PNG file, and is sized to fit on a standard A4 piece of paper. It shows the 216 so-called “web safe” or “non-dithering” colours (there are actually only 22 web safe colours, but those are revolting).
