Accessing Yahoo! Music with Firefox

Firefox with GM pKLaunch script installed Here’s a tips on how to access and view your favourite video’s at Yahoo! Music previously known as launch.com using Mozilla Firefox browser. Yahoo! Music embedded or streaming Media uses an ActiveX Control to invoke Windows Media Player, which Firefox does not support.

Eventhough there is “Accessing Launch.com Embedded Video” guide over at MozillaZine Firefox Support Forum, but it doesn’t work for me. Luckily, I found pkLaunch which happens to be an improvement code of Launch Fox, a greasemonkey Firefox extension script.

This step have been tested successfully both on Windows XP with embedded Windows Media Player and Gentoo Linux with embedded mplayerplug-in using Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6.

How to install and use this script?

  1. First download the Greasemonkey Firefox extension.
  2. Restart your browser to enable the extension.
  3. Since the original link is somehow broken, please download the pkLaunch here. Please go to pkLaunch author’s website to download. Make sure your pKlaunch script and Greasemonkey is the latest version. Right click the download link then “Install User Script”. Press OK on the confirmation window.
  4. Refresh your browser.
  5. Go to Yahoo! Music and click any video you like to watch using Mozilla Firefox.

Note to Gentoo Linux user. The USE flags for mplayer are very important. If your USE flags don’t contain some of the important flags then you will have trouble playing streaming media.
Probably the most important mplayer USE flag for streaming media are nas, network and sse.
And dont to forget to emerge mplayerplug-in.

Beside enjoying myself with Yahoo! Music, watching the latest movie trailer on Apple is also exciting.

Have fun!
